Falla, Manuel de (1876-1946 Spain-Argentina) Saturday, 17 September, 2005 Biography [Born: 1876 Died: 1946] Born in 1876 in Cadiz, the historical seaport town at the southern-most tip of Andalucia, Manuel de Falla is the greatest Spanish composer of this century. His formal musical education began with piano lessons, and when Falla was twenty his family moved to Madrid where he studied with the distinguished teacher José Tragó. He then went on to study composition with Felipe Pedrell, the teacher and scholar who led the revival of Spanish music which took place towards the end of the nineteenth century. In 1904 Falla's one-act opera La vida breve (Life is Short) won the composition competition of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes and at the same time he was awarded a prestigious piano prize organised by the piano makers Ortiz y Cussó. In 1907 he achieved a long-held ambition of travelling to Paris and was welcomed there by Ravel, Debussy (with whom he had previously corresponded) and especially by Paul Dukas. He completed several chamber works and began work on Noches en los jardines de Espãna (Nights in Gardens of Spain )before the outbreak of war in 1914 compelled him to return to his native country. Two years later he was approached by Diaghilev to write a work for the Russian Ballet and in response composed a mime-play in two tableaux, El corregidor y la molinera (The Magistrate and the Miller's Wife) which, with some subsequent revisions, became El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat), and was produced highly successfully in London in 1919 with choreography by Massine and designs by Picasso. Following the deaths of his parents in 1919 he settled in Granada, where he remained until the end of the Civil War (1939), and composed several of his most important works including El retablo de maese Pedro (Master Peter's Puppet Show), Psyché and Concerto per clavicembalo (Harpsichord Concerto). He then moved to Argentina and worked there until his death in 1946 just a few days before his 70th birthday, leaving the vast oratorio Atlántida still unfinished.

Assad, Sergio (b. 1952- Brazil) Thursday, 15 September, 2005 Biography "I believe we were always meant to be a team right from the first time we picked up our guitars. We began playing guitar at exactly the same time, we always studied with the same teachers and learned the same music and techniques. Such interaction can only really happen with brothers, because we shared every aspect of our musical education together." The Assads' St. Louis Post-Dispatch Interview The Assads embark on a North American tour in fall 1995 with engagements that include Toronto's Ford Centre, and performances in Phoenix, Nashville, The Wolf Trap Foundation in Vienna, Virginia, and New York City. In 1993-94, the duo returned to Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall in New York. Last season they appeared at Pasadena's Ambassador Auditorium and in San Francisco, Seattle, Miami and New York City. The twentieth century has produced a number of guitar duos formed by happenstance or recording-company intervention. But for Brazilian-born siblings Sergio and Odair Assad, the roots obviously go much deeper. Today's foremost guitar duo, the Assads have been credited with doublehandedly reviving Brazilian music for the instrument. Gnattali, Nobre, Krieger, and Mignone have dedicated pieces to them, as have the Russian Nikita Koshkin, Argentinian Astor Piazzolla, and Frenchman Roland Dyens. As children, the Assads' mandolinist father guided their discovery of Brazilian music. Their uncanny ability to play guitar together soon evidenced itself, and seven years of study with the classical guitarist and lutenist Monina Tavora (a disciple and former pupil of Andrés Segovia) followed. The Assads' American career began in 1969, under the "Youth for Understanding" aegis. A major prize at the "Rostrom of Young Interpreters" in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, launched their European career. They also achieved victory in the 1973 Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra competition for young soloists. They have performed in recital and with orchestra throughout France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Poland, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Australia, Great Britain, the Far East, Argentina, and their native Brazil. Their Baroque CD (Nonesuch, 1994) has received wide acclaim and they recorded their fourth CD for the label, to be released in 1996. Their previous two discs for Nonesuch featured the music of Latin-American composers. Coeck, Armand (b.1941- Belgium) Saturday, 17 September, 2005 Biography Armand Coeck (°1941, Menen, Belgium) Ever since his childhood Armand Coeck was attracted to music. At first he explored the piano in his parents house through many hours of improvisation. At the age of 13 he received from his father a guitar that grew to be his favourite instrument. He taught himself solfège, what made it possible for him to read sheet music. He entered a music shop in Ghent, and bought the only original piece for classical guitar available there at that time: the Fifth Prelude of Heitor Villa-Lobos. While others need years before they can reach the level the work requires, he quickly masters it. He would remain interested in Villa-Lobos as well as in South-American folk music. Two other figures who had a great influence on him were Andrès Segovia and Django Reinhardt. His first essays on composition date from 1957, while he continued to enlarge by self-tuition his knowledge of harmony, counterpoint and composition. In 1961 his Fantaisie received an honourable mention among work of Rodrigo and Sainz de la Maza, at the Coupe Internationale de Guitare, a competition for composition organised at the ORTF in Paris by Robert J.Vidal. Also in 1961 he was appointed by Jan Decadt as guitar teacher in Harelbeke, where he soon would gain a strong reputation through the high quality of his lessons and students. The following year Armand Coeck was a laureate in the same competition for Brumes and receives an honourable mention for the duo Souvenir d’été. The world of the classical guitar was in his reach – the first avant-garde composer for the instrument has risen. At the proclamation Brumes was performed by renowned Manuel Lopez Ramos. For the first time in his life, Coeck experienced the gap between composer and interpreter; it was always himself who played his works. And however the Paris’ audience was very enthusiastic and the home front granted big recognition, he himself became disappointed in the pieces. He denied to give permission to the duo Pomponio-Zàrate to play Souvenir d’été, and refused the invitation of Lucien Goethals, composer of total sề-rì-á music, to become member of the IPEM. It occurred to him that he’s the only one who really understood his music: all these years he had been experimenting in his little room, locked up from the outside world, creating an own highly subjective musical universe. This matter and the fact that he had to join the army, effected an identity crisis. All his compositions disappeared in a folder. In the quest for authenticity, honesty and essence, Coeck studied medieval music and got particularly fascinated by the counterpoint and mystical atmosphere of Adam de la Halle and other troubadours. Three years passed by without one new composition. He had always thought he had to be a voluminous writer, after Villa-Lobos. However from now on, he would only elaborate the ideas of which he felt they were worth it. In 1965 he wrote Rosa Mystica, which marked a new era distinguished by simplicity, modality and folkloristic elements. Evocation dates from this period. In the meanwhile he had a busy concert schedule, which took him to prestigious halls in Flanders, Brussels, Paris and Madrid, as well as to performances for radio and TV. But he renounced this concert career, in order to devote himself entirely to composition and education. Around 1979, he became passionate in playing the Paraguayan harp, which he learned again by himself through improvisation. He reached a high technical standard in a minimum of time in collaboration with the Paraguayan harpist Digno Garcia. He hardly touched the guitar for years. Then a young man of exceptional talent, Gino Herman, entered his class. Coeck developed his potential in a short time to a very high level. Inspired by the interest the new pupil shows in the master’s compositions and the astonishing skills Herman demonstrated, Armand Coeck wrote Constellations in 1986. This milestone in the composer’s oeuvre meant also the beginning of a new period, which was characterised by a lot more chromaticism than in the previous one – probably as a reaction to the diatonic scale of the Paraguayan harp. As in Constellations and in Hymn to Egypt, Coeck worked with short melodic cells, which dominate the work. In 1996 he composed Concerto for Guitar and Small Orchestra, commissioned by the ‘Festival of Flanders’. The world creation took place in 1997 in the Theatre of Kortrijk, performed by the famous guitarist Carlos Bonell and Prima la Musica conducted by Dirk Vermeulen. Bonell was enchanted by the oeuvre of Armand Coeck, and provided its global recognition by playing Constellations through all the continents of the world. Already in 1991 Gino Herman dedicated a full CD to the works of Armand Coeck. Now several performers, among others Simon Dinnigan, Jad Azkoul and Hughes Kolp, released recordings with his compositions. From the nineties onwards Coeck showed increasingly interest in enlarging the chamber music repertoire for the combination guitar and other instruments - especially the strings got his attention: Israfel for violin and guitar, and a lot of pieces with cello demonstrate this. Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Mario (1895-1968 Italy-USA) Friday, 16 September, 2005 Biography 3 April 1895 - 16 March 1968 Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco is, to most people, merely one of a vast number of composers - from this century or any other - whose name is slightly familiar, probably in this case from hearing something for guitar on the radio or in a concert once. Every day we are told that such-and-such a composer is 'unduly neglected' or a 'forgotten master'. Most of these composers do indeed have considerable merit; however, few of them can have written quite such a wide variety of music as immediately appealing and as rewarding for both performer and listener as Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Castelnuovo was born and brought up in the Italian province of Tuscany and began composing at the age of only nine. In 1915 he began study with Ildebrando Pizzetti, one of the most influential teachers in Italy at the time. He also came to the notice of pianist and composer Alfredo Casella, who was an early proponent of his music, programming it in his recitals and promoting it in his many writings on new music. Castelnuovo was a successful pianist, performing as soloist, accompanist and chamber musician, and was involved in the formation of the Società Nazionale di Musica (later Società Italiana di Musica Moderna), along with Pizzetti, Casella, Gian Francesco Malipiero, Ottorino Respighi, Vittorio Gui and Vincenzo Tommasini (all, apart from Respighi, practically vanished from concert programs; one might almost be forgiven for thinking that Italian composition ceased for around 30 years after Puccini's death, although in fact the country was very active). In 1938, Castelnuovo was forced by the rising tide of anti-Semitism in Italy to flee to America, where he soon found work as a composer of film music for MGM Studios. He contributed to over 200 films and at the same time somehow found time to write concert music, although he evidently found the experience of leaving his homeland shattering. In time, he became one of Los Angeles' most sought-after composition teachers, with pupils including John Williams, Henry Mancini and André Previn, the latter commenting that 'pupil of Castelnuovo-Tedesco' was virtually a requirement for young composers to be accepted at the studios. Apart from being admired as a composer, he was held in the highest esteem as a friend by all who knew him; his cataloguer Nick Rossi, for instance, commented, 'Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco was not only the kindest and most generous person I have ever known, he was also the most brilliant.' Castelnuovo's catalogue extends to opus 208 or thereabouts - not to mention works without opus number - including operas (one on 'The Merchant of Venice', another, 'Saùl', concertos for various instruments (his second violin concerto, subtitled 'I Profeti', commissioned by Heifetz), chamber music for many different combinations of instruments, ballet scores, oratorios and cantatas, nearly 300 solo songs with piano plus many more with guitar.... It is perhaps not so hard to see why Castelnuovo's music has not been more successful. At a time when to be anything but 'progressive' was a mortal sin in the arts, he must have appeared reactionary (writing tunes in the 1940s and '50s!) and therefore, by implication, sterile. Now that we have lost our horror of melody he is due for rediscovery and rehabilitation. Castelnuovo of course understood the pressures of modernism, as he made clear in this quote from an interview, which is also a beautifully succinct summary of his artistic creed: 'I have never believed in modernism, or in neoclassicism, or any other isms. I believe that music is a form of language capable of progress and renewal (and I myself believe that I have a feeling for the contemporary and, therefore, am sufficiently modern). Yet music should not discard what was contributed by preceding generations. Every means of expression can be useful and just, if it is used at the opportune moment (through inner necessity rather than through caprice or fashion). The simplest means are generally the best. I believe that my personality was formed to a decisive degree quite early, but what I have sought to do, during my artistic evolution, has been to express myself with means always simpler and more direct, in a language always clearer and more precise.' Diaz, Alirio (b. 1923- Venezuela) Thursday, 15 September, 2005 Biography Alirio Diaz, splendid example of natural talent, was born at Caserio la Candelara, a small venezuelan village near to Carora, on the 12th of November in 1923, in a family of modest origins, eighth of eleven brothers. Since a child he proves a great interest for music with different instruments, but choosing guitar as his expressive way. Pupil of the founder of the venezuelan guitaristic school, Raul Borges, at Conservatorio in Caracas, where he takes his first concert in 1950, Daiz ends his preparation at Conservatorio in Madrid with Regino Sainz de la Maza. Just an year of frequency (1958) is enough to obtain the first prize. From Spain he reaches Italy where the M.o Andrèas Segovia has a class nearby to the accademy Chigiana of Siena: Diaz will become his first assistance and substitute until 1964. From that year, his name and his fame spread everywhere in the world. His brillant concertistic carrier begins in those years. With the M.o Segovia's teachings, with the contacts with other important author, as Villa-Lobos, Lauro and others, with his virtuousity combined to a strong artistic sensibility, Alirio Diaz becomes one of the most famous guitar perfomers in the twentieth century. He has concerts in many european nations, in Japan, in the Unitd States, in Australia and he becomes citizen of the world. Tireless divulger oflatin-american musical patrimony (Barrios, Lauro, Mangorè, Sojo, Cordero, Carreño and others), he checks and several musics by baroque authors as Scarlatti, Corbetta and V. Galilei, harmonizes popular south-american and napoletan songs giving them a new instrumental and interpretative dress and he records about thirty disks. Guest of honour in the greatest guitaristic shows, he partecipates in the Concorso Internazionale di Chitarra Classica di Alessandria since its first edition in 1968, conferring to it prestige and a big emphasis in the giutaristic world's panorama. For his artistic merits and for his human qualities he receives the freedom of Alessandria, great international recognitions and public assignments as cultural counseller at Foreign Office of Venezuela. Gilardino, Angelo (b.1941- Italy) Sunday, 18 December, 2005 Biography Angelo Gilardino was born in Vercelli in 1941 where he later studied (guitar, violoncello and composition) in the local music schools. His concert career, which lasted from 1958 to 1981, had a great influence on the development of the guitar as an instrument in the ‘limelight’ in the twentieth century. Indeed, he gave premiere performances of hundreds of new compositions dedicated to him by composers from all over the world. In 1967 Edizioni Musicali Bèrben appointed him to supervise what has become the most important collection of music for guitar of the twentieth century and which bears his name. In 1981 Gilardino retired from concert work to devote his time to composition, teaching and musicological research. Since 1982 he has published an extensive collection of his own compositions: Studi di virtuosità e di trascendenza, which John W. Duarte hailed as “milestones in the new repertoire of the classical guitar”, sonatas, variations, various pieces such as Colloquio con Andrés Segovia, Sonatine des fleurs et des oiseaux, Tríptico de las visiones, Catskill Pond, La casa del faro, Sonata Mediterranea, Sonata del Guadalquivir, etc., four concertos for solo guitar and guitar groups (Concerto d'estate, Concierto de Córdoba, premiered at the Córdoba Festival in 1994, Poema d'inverno, Concerto d'autunno), and seven concertos with chamber orchestra: a concerto for guitar (Leçons de Ténèbres, 1996), a concerto for mandolin and guitar (Fiori di novembre, 1997), Concerto Italiano for four guitars (1998), a concerto for flute and guitar (La casa delle ombre, 1999), Liederkonzert for two guitars (2000), a concerto for guitar and accordion (En las tierras altas, 2001), a concerto for violoncello and guitar (Star of The Morning, 2004). He has also composed chamber music for the guitar. His works are frequently performed in concert halls all over the world, recorded and included in competitions. His contribution to teaching began with the Liceo Musicale "G.B. Viotti" in Vercelli where he taught from 1965 to 1981 followed by an appointment as professor at the “Antonio Vivaldi” Conservatory in Alessandria from 1981 to 2004. From 1984 to 2003 he held post-graduate courses at the “Lorenzo Perosi” Accademia Superiore Internazionale di Musica in Biella. He has also held 200 courses, seminars and master classes in various European countries at the invitation of universities, academies, conservatories, music associations and festivals. The city of Lagonegro made him an honorary citizen in 1989 in recognition of his teaching at the International Guitar Festival. In 1993 the University of Granada invited him to hold a course in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Andrés Segovia’s birth. In 1998 he was awarded the “Marengo Music” prize of the Conservatory of Alessandria. As a musicologist he has made a considerable contribution to the guitar repertoire of the first half of the twentieth century with the discovery and publication of important works which were either unknown or considered as lost, such as Ottorino Respighi’s Variazioni per chitarra, the Sonata para guitarra by Antonio José and a large corpus of guitar works written for Andrés Segovia by Spanish, French and British composers during the Twenties and the Thirties. Since 2002 he has edited the publication of these works in The Andrés Segovia Archive, published by Edizioni Musicali Bèrben. He has also reconstructed the concerto for guitar and orchestra by the Russian composer Boris Asafiev, published by Editions Orphée. The rescue of these works and their subsequent publication has given new substance to the historical repertoire of the twentieth century. In 1997 he was appointed as artistic director of the “Andrés Segovia” Foundation of Linares, Spain. Henze, Hans Werner (b.1926- Germany) Saturday, 17 September, 2005 Biography Born in Westphalia in 1926, Henze received his earliest musical training against the background of the rise of Nazism in Germany; his realisation that all the modernist music, art and literature that stimulated him most profoundly had been condemned by the Nazis ingrained in him the belief in the potential of art to be genuinely subversive, inspiring a tendency that was to surface explicitly in his work thirty years later. After the Second World War he resumed his formal education by studying with Wolfgang Fortner, and composed the first pieces that he still acknowledges in an elegant neo-Classical style, which mingled Stravinsky and Hindemith while already demonstrating the innate lyrical gift that has characterised Henze's music in all its phases. In the late 1940s, however, he began to attend the Darmstadt summer schools and realised the value of serialism. But, typically, he did not follow many of his contemporaries in embracing the technique to the exclusion of all else, and instead fused it with his neo-Classical style. The Violin Concerto (1947) first put this synthesis into practice, and it served also for his first opera, "Boulevard Solitude". In 1953, Henze left Germany to live in Italy. The change of scenery brought a new richness and colour into his music, an expressive world that was celebrated in the opera "King Stag" (1955), and, over the following ten years, in a sequence of operas each with their attendant satellite works in response to a seemingly endless supply of commissions. "Elegy for Young Lovers" (1961) and "The Bassarids" (1965), both to librettos by W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman, belong to this period, as do the oratorio "Novae de infinito laudes" (1962) and the cantata "Being Beauteous" (1963). With "The Bassarids" Henze reached a stylistic turning-point, and during the second half of the 1960s he began to look for ways of combining his new musical interests with his increasing commitment to radical politics. Works such as "The Raft of the Medusa" (1968), the Sixth Symphony (1969) and the "recital" for baritone and instruments "El Cimarrón" (1970), show his music becoming more angular, and suppressing its lyrical style. The musical climax of Henze's explicit political engagement was reached in the early 1970s, with the completion of the eclectic song-cycle. "Voices" (1973) and the "actions for music" "We Come to the River", to a text by Edward Bond, first staged at Covent Garden in 1976. In its aftermath Henze turned to more traditional forms, producing three string quartets as well as his Seventh Symphony in the late 1970s and early 1980s; "The English Cat", again to a satirical libretto by Bond, was constructed as a "number opera" from a sequence of traditional closed forms. But with "Das verratene Meer", after a novel by Yukio Mishima, first performed in 1990, he returned to the through-composed music dramas of the early 1960s, though the score also betrays the influence on his work of Monteverdi's "Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria", of which he made a sumptuous new realisation in 1981. In the early 1990s Henze's work was dominated by the composition of an instrumental Requiem, dedicated to the memory of Michael Vyner, the former director of the London Sinfonietta. These nine "spiritual concertos" were first performed complete in 1993, and that year also saw the premiere of his Eighth Symphony with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Seiji Ozawa. In January 1997 the Bavarian State Opera gave the premiere of "Venus and Adonis", and in November of the same year the Berlin Philharmonic introduced his Ninth Symphony conducted by Ingo Metzmacher. In 1999, he composed his Tenth Symphony which has been given its world première at the Lucerne Festival (Switzerland) in 2002, by Sir Simon Rattle. Paganini, Niccolò (1782-1840 Italy) Sunday, 11 September, 2005 Biography Nicolo Paganini was born in Genoa, Italy, Oct 27, 1782. He received music lessons from his father before he was 6 years old and later from the best instructors in Genoa. In 1795 he went to Parma, Italy to study but the teachers there told him they could do nothing more for him. He then commenced on a course of self-training so rigorous that he often played 15 hours a day. He wrote much of his music for his own performances, music so difficult that it was commonly thought that he entered into a pack with the Devil. His compositions included 24 caprices (published in 1820) for unaccompanied violin that are among the most difficult works ever written for the instrument. He also challenged musicians with such compositions as his 12 sonatas for violin and guitar; 6 violin concerti; and 6 quartets for violin, viola, cello, and guitar. Ponce, Manuel María (1882-1948 Mexico) Friday, 16 September, 2005 Biography Ponce was born in Zacatecas, Mexico. He spent his early career composing, conducting, teaching, and writing music criticism in Mexico. He moved to Paris in the 1920s and after studying with the French composer Paul Dukas , Ponce abandoned the genteel salon-music style then prevalent in Mexico, and began applying an impressionistic idiom to works with concise structures and skilled counterpoint. Later on, he developed a nationalistic style in which he expressed his Mexican origins. Ponce was a very close friend of guitarist Andres Segovia, for whom he wrote almost all of his guitar music. His guitar works in this style became standards in the modern guitar repertoire. His other compositions include orchestral, chamber, and piano music and songs, the most famous of which is Estrellita (1914).
